The 15th New York Cavalry

Formed principally in upstate New York, the 15th NYVC was a late addition to the Army of the Potomac forming companies during 1863.  As a part of George Armstrong Custer's division the units fought throughout the Shenandoah Valley  under the command of Phil Sheridan.  They were present at Five Forks, and Appomattox, and participated in the last cavalry charge of the Civil War.  Col.  Root, was killed at Appomattox Court House.   Please take your time and browse our pages.  Of interest should be the 15th Regimental History detailing their history in depth and the 15th's  part in the Civil War.  In addition spend some time visiting our reenacting pages.  A short description follows.  I hope you enjoy your stay and please return again to visit.

The Historic 15th New York Volunteer Cavalry

In 1993, after 130 years, the 15th New York Volunteer Cavalry was reactivated in order to preserve Civil War History. Today the unit participates in numerous events, ranging from parades, living history demonstrations at schools and parks, to major Civil War reenactments. The 15th cavalry practices both mounted and dismounted drills monthly throughout the year. Currently we have made a home at Hill-Hold Museum in Campbell Hall, New York.

"Remember Me to All Enquiring Friends" by Michael F. Hurd  on his Great Grandfather Captain Burritt of the 15th. A fascinating collection of his letters, diary, and family genealogy should prove very interesting to any Civil War buff.  Many interesting facts, and pictures accompany the book. Captain Hurd was a prominent player in many chapters of the regimental history. A copy may be purchased from the author Michael F. Hurd PO Box 40 Colebrook, CT 06021 for $17.00.
